An earthly story with a heavenly meaning—that’s the typical definition of parable. Jesus taught so often with parables that Matthew wrote “All these things spake Jesus unto the multitude in parables; and without a parable spake he not unto them” (Matt. 13:34). Jesus used stories about things His audience understood; today, we may need to help our kids understand some of the earthly things—and we certainly need to help them understand the heavenly meaning!
The original meaning of the word “parable” was to lay alongside. So this visual does exactly that. One 8.5” x 11” page provides an illustration of the parable while its matching page “lays alongside” with an illustration of the heavenly meaning. Each page has a color-coded border to indicate in which part of Jesus’ ministry He spoke it (green—early ministry, blue—later ministry, red—passion week). Each parable also a symbol to indicate the group/type of parable it is (kingdom parables—church building with people in it, lost and found parables—lost and found sign, prayer parables—praying hands, preparation parables—checkmark).
Nineteen parables are included: The Sower, The Tares, The Mustard Seed, The Leaven, The Hidden Treasure, Pearl of Great Price, The Dragnet, The Laborers in the Vineyard, The Two Sons, The Wicked Husbandmen, The Seed Growing Secretly, The Lost Coin, The Lost Sheep, The Lost Son, The Friend at Midnight, The Unjust Judge, The Pharisee and the Publican, The Ten Virgins, The Two Builders
