The Jews repeatedly disobeyed God and chose idols over Him. After many years of patience and warnings, God punished the Jews for their continual disobedience. Jews were carried away to Babylonian captivity three different times. After the promised 70 years in captivity, Cyrus sent the Jews back to Jerusalem. This was the first of three returns from the captivity, each led by a different man and for a different purpose.
